People in San Diego may have heard about a rash of dog attacks around the area lately. In late June two pit bulls attacked an older woman and her pet Chihuahua as they were walking around their neighborhood in the Harbor City neighborhood of Los Angeles. The dogs rushed at the woman and her pup before they had a chance to protect themselves. As the woman tried to scoop up the tiny dog, the two pit bulls mauled and killed it
The two dogs were impounded at an animal shelter indefinitely, but people in the area are demanding city officials do something about these brutal attacks that are occurring in their own neighborhoods. Witnesses say the two dogs in question had previously attacked another pedestrian walking his dog, killing that dog as well. If the two dogs had been dealt with accordingly at that time, then this tragedy could have been avoided.
All of this happens in the month after a 63-year-old woman was mauled to death by a pack of vicious dogs as she was jogging in the Palmdale area. The woman suffered between 150 and 200 bites from the four pit bulls, which had a history of attacks in the area prior to the death. Now the dog’s owner is facing felony murder charges for keeping these dangerous animals unrestrained and violating numerous city animal ordinances.
Even a single dog bite can cause serious injury and disfigurement, and when a group of vicious dogs is left unrestrained, the results can be fatal. People who are attacked by dangerous animals are entitled to compensation for their pain and suffering, medical expenses and other damages. By making more dangerous dog owners accept liability and responsibility for their pets, hopefully the number of bite incidents in the state will finally decrease.
