More and more of us are climbing into for-hire cars to get where we are going – into a taxi, or an Uber or Lyft car. More and more, people are discovering that these vehicles have shady histories.
An investigative report by a Seattle TV station looked into the issue of for-hire car safety, focusing in particular on the issue of safety recalls.
When you are informed of a safety recall for your personal car, you probably respond to it. But the KING-5 investigative squad found that a third of the for-hire cars in the study failed to respond.
The station compared two data lists:
- Thousands of vehicle identification numbers (VINs) of for-hire cars in New York City, Seattle, Houston and Tampa
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) database for recalls
