The dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol are well-known. Despite having knowledge of the potential consequences of such actions, people in California and across the country continue to do so. Unfortunately, a recent fatal crash has led to an arrest. The alleged driver could also face wrongful death claims.
The incident happened late at night on a day in August. According to reports, police say that a 19-year-old male driver was traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver allegedly steered to the right, causing the vehicle to climb a steep embankment. The vehicle then returned to the roadway where it struck a center divider.
Two passengers in the back seat, a 20-year-old and a 21-year-old, were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver suffered major injuries while the front seat passenger suffered minor injuries. Police say that another car became involved when it struck one of the ejected victims. The driver of the first vehicle has since been arrested, suspected of driving under the influence.
The decision to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol places many people at risk. Now two families are left to cope with the unexpected loss of their loved ones. Few families in California are prepared for the financial ramifications of their loss, especially lost wages and funeral expenses. To help ensure their financial stability during a time of emotional grief, many who lose a family member due to someone else’s negligence choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit. An attorney with experience with such cases can help them fully understand their options.
