It is often easy to take personal safety for granted while driving a motor vehicle. However, a simple miscalculation while driving could ultimately have significant consequences for both the driver and those who may happen to be in the area. Unfortunately, a recent car accident in California demonstrates the potential harm a driver can cause.

The incident happened one afternoon on a day in early July. According to reports, a 28-year-old man was driving a hatchback vehicle. Unfortunately, he allegedly allowed the vehicle to cross the center line into oncoming traffic while maneuvering a curve.

Police say that the vehicle struck an oncoming pickup truck, driven by a 57-year-old man, head on. The driver of the truck died at the scene while the driver of the hatchback suffered major injuries and required hospitalization. The latter was taken into police custody in the days following the accident and remains there. Charges against him include driving under the influence of drugs resulting in injury and vehicular manslaughter.

While law enforcement officials will pursue justice for the deceased California man, his family must now cope with their unexpected, preventable loss. Few families are prepared for a fatal car accident such as this, often leaving them struggling financially — as a result of funeral costs and lost wages — in addition to the emotional burden their loss creates. As such, they may choose to consult with an experienced attorney to determine if filing a wrongful death lawsuit might be an appropriate option for them. If such a case is successful, grieving family members could receive a monetary award that will help them with the financial consequences of their loss.
