People in San Diego may have heard about the recent arrest of a 50-year-old man who seriously injured a cyclist in a car accident back in October of last year. According to police, the man was wanted for reckless driving causing serious injury, which is a felony under California law. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison.
The accident occurred on State Route 67, at a location where two lanes merge into one. It was this merge lane that apparently triggered the chain of events that left the victim, a 38-year-old woman, seriously injured. Two cars entering the merge lane apparently refused to yield, leading to a minor collision when the two cars bumped each other from the side. However, just after the crash the driver of a Dodge Ram truck veered into the adjacent bicycle lane, sideswiping the hapless victim and knocking her over before continuing along, not even having realized the serious bicycle accident he had caused.
As a result of the crash, the woman suffered a broken neck and collarbone, as well as a concussion. The woman, who was taking part in a charity cycling event at the time of the crash, is still recovering from her significant injuries.
