Most drivers in California are aware of how to decrease their chances of being involved in an accident. Unfortunately, there are some collisions that even the most skilled and experienced drivers cannot avoid, such as those involving wrong-way drivers. Police say that such was the case in a recent crash that could ultimately result in a wrongful death lawsuit.
The crash happened in the southbound lanes of a California freeway just before 3:30 a.m. on a day in late August. Police claim that a 33-year-old male was driving a vehicle north in the southbound lanes. His vehicle reportedly collided head-on with a southbound vehicle.
Both occupants of that southbound vehicle, including the 70-year-old driver, died as a result of injuries suffered in the accident. Police say that the northbound vehicle ultimately caught on fire; the driver was transported to the hospital. It is unclear if police suspect that alcohol or drugs may have played a factor in the crash, but the accident likely remains under investigation.
Unfortunately, the families of the two deceased victims must face the news of their loved ones’ tragic and likely preventable deaths. To help ensure that they are able to meet their financial obligations — including funeral costs — as well as attempt to hold the driver accountable for his alleged actions, they may choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit in a California civil court. If they can prove that their losses were the result of negligence, they could receive a financial award. While such an outcome will likely do little to negate the grief they feel over their loss, it will allow them to focus on their emotional recovery without concern about their ability to meet their financial obligations.
