The dangers of drinking and driving are well-publicized. Unfortunately, many people in California and across the country fail to heed warnings about the potential harm they can cause when they get behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol. Now a family may be considering a wrongful death lawsuit after police say a woman was killed in an accident caused by a driver who was under the influence of alcohol.
The incident happened on a day in late October. According to reports, an 81-year-old woman was traveling north on a California interstate. Unfortunately, the California Highway Patrol claims that a 57-year-old woman was traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes, causing a head-on collision.
The older woman was transported to the hospital by helicopter but passed away as a result of injuries suffered in the crash. The alleged wrong-way driver, who police suspect was under the influence of alcohol, suffered serious injuries. She was released from police custody in order to receive medical treatment but faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of drugs.
A family is now left mourning the unexpected death of their loved following the alleged negligence of an inebriated driver. Because the costs associated with funerals are often more than many families are prepared for, surviving family members could potentially struggle both financially and emotionally. To help with these costs, many people in California who have lost a family member in such a manner choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit. If successfully presented, the lawsuit could result in a monetary judgment.
