The Stages Of Bedsores And Pressure Ulcers

Bedsores develop into varying stages of severity. Each stage involves the following:

• Stage 1 – This is the beginning stage, where the skin is not broken. It will appear red or show a slight discoloration, depending on skin tone. When touched, it will not lighten, or blanch. The injury site also may vary in temperature compared to the surrounding skin and be tender or painful to the touch.
• Stage 2 – The outer layer of skin and part of the layer beneath is damaged or missing. Wound is often pink or red in color and may look like a blister.
• Stage 3 – The ulcer looks crater-like, and some fat may be exposed by the missing skin. The bottom of the injured area may have yellowish dead tissue and damage may extend beyond the surface into healthy skin below.
• Stage 4 – There is a loss of significant tissue, and muscle, bone or tendons may be exposed. The damaged tissue at the bottom of the wound may now also be darker. Healthy skin below may also have suffered more damage.
